History of Delhi

Delhi has a rich historical background and has been home to many ancient empires such as the Mauryan Empire, Mughal Empire, and renowned dynasties like the Tomara dynasty, the Slave dynasty, Tughlaq dynasty, Khilji dynasty, and so on. It is believed that Delhi was Indraprastha, the capital of the Pandavas, in the Mahabharata epic. Delhi was also a significant place for Sufism. Delhi became India’s political capital when the British shifted its capital from Calcutta in 1911. The name ‘New Delhi’ was given to the capital city in 1927, and on 13 February 1931, Delhi was officially inaugurated as the capital of India. When India became independent on 15 August 1947, New Delhi became the capital of India.

Geographical Area and Location of Delhi

Delhi lies in North India at 28.63°N 77.21°E. Delhi lies at an altitude between 200–250 m (650–820 ft) and is situated on the Yamuna River. The River Yamuna is the only major river flowing through the city. The Delhi ridge, which reaches a height of 1043 ft, originates from the Aravali Range in the South and surrounds the West, Northeast, and Northwest parts of the city. Demographics

The metro area population of Delhi in 2020 was 30,291,000, and the number of females per 1000 males is 868. The literacy rate in Delhi is 86.21 %. In terms of area, Delhi is the largest metropolis and holds the second position according to the population. Hindi is the most commonly spoken language (81%), followed by Punjabi (7%) and Urdu (6%).

Delhi is officially known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT), famous as an important cultural, commercial, and political hub of the country. Currently, Delhi has 11 districts. Transportation

Being the capital of India, Delhi has an extensive transport system. Indira Gandhi International Airport, which lies to the southwest of Delhi, is the main airport and is maintained by the GMR Group. It is one of the busiest airports in South Asia.

Delhi is the headquarters of the Northern Railway. There are five main railway stations in Delhi; New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station, Nizamuddin Railway Station, Anand Vihar railway terminal, and Sarai Rohilla railway station. There is also a suburban railway system in the city. The National Highways that pass through Delhi are the National Highway Number 1, 2, 8, 10, and 24.

The state-owned Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is the significant bus service provider and operates one of the largest fleets of CNG-fuelled buses worldwide. DTC will provide an E-ticketing facility to the commuters. Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot said that the city administration will launch contactless e-ticketing services in all its buses from November.

The Delhi Metro rapid transit system, built and operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), is another means of transportation in Delhi. Jharkhand, a Goldmine of Mineral Resources

Introduction

Jharkhand lies in eastern India, formed on November 15, 2000. It shares its borders with Bihar to the north, Uttar Pradesh to the northwest, Chhattisgarh to the west, Odisha to the south, and West Bengal to the east. It became an independent state after splitting from Bihar. Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand, which is a well-known industrial and academic city of Jharkhand.

Geography

Jharkhand is known as a mining and industrial hub of India with Jamshedpur, Bokaro, and Dhanbad as the highly industrialized cities of eastern India. It is replete with thick forest, mines, and natural beauty. That is why it is well-known as one of the wealthiest states of the country with a skilled workforce, abandoned mineral wealth, and forestry products.

Its cover of thick forests is the natural habitat of tigers and Indian elephants. Jharkhand is the origin of various rivers such as Koel, Damodar, Brahmani, Subarnarekha, and others. Known for its rich flora and fauna, it is home to various national parks and the zoological gardens: Betla National Park, Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary, Udhwa Lake Bird Sanctuary, and Singhbhum Elephant Reserve, Palamu Tiger Reserve.

Demographics

Jharkhand’s population is 32,988,134, as per the 2011 census, consisting of 16.93 million males and 16.03 million females. The sex ratio of the state is 947 females to 1,000 males (as per the 2011 census). It occupies the 14th position regarding total occupiers in the country.

About one-third of its population is tribal. There are as many as 32 tribes in Jharkhand, out of these nine are classified as PTG (Primitive Tribe Groups). They are – Asur, Birhor, Birajia, Korwa, Parahiya (Baiga), Sabar, Mal Pahariya, Souriya Pahariya, and Bile Kahria.

Jharkhand has seen a lot of migration from the neighbouring states of West Bengal and Bihar for employment. In this state, tribal communities do not follow Hinduism; they have their own spiritual beliefs called Sarna.

Mineral Wealth

As discussed earlier, Jharkhand is the goldmine of minerals and ores such as iron ore, copper ore, mica, coal, bauxite, manganese, fireclay, china clay, limestone, kainite, graphite, chromites, uranium, thorium, asbestos, gold, silver, and Yemenite. In the production of some of these minerals and ores, Jharkhand ranks among the top three states of India.

Politics

Despite its industrial growth and mineral resources, the people are financially poor, and the civic infrastructure and amenities in the state are substandard. The poor situation in Jharkhand arises due to poor governance and corruption in politics. Annual per capita income is also low. Jharkhand has 24 districts, and the Jharkhand government runs the government machinery, which is assisted by a lobby of IAS officers.

Religions and Language

After sweeping colonization, followers of other religions such as Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity also settled here, but tribal faith Sarna is still growing. Bhojpuri, Hindi, Bengali, and Urdu are the main languages spoken, whereas the tribal people also speak their language: Kharia, Paharia, Bhumij, Mundari, Santhali, and Ho. People of Jharkhand utter some of the Dravidian languages like Oraon and Korwa in the state as well.

Bihar

Bihar is a fascinating tourism destination and is known for its monuments and relics dating from the ancient to medieval times. Some treasures worth visiting in the state are the Tomb of Sher Shah Suri, Barabar Caves- one of the oldest rock-cut caves, Vikramshila Monastery, Buddha Smriti Park, ruins of the ancient city of Vaishali, Bodhi Tree, and the Mahabodhi Temple. Takht Sri Patna Sahib, built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in honor of Guru Gobind Singh Ji who was born in Patna.

Madhya Pradesh is known for famous cities like Gwalior, which is popular for attractions like the Gwalior Fort, Teli-Ka-Mandir, Sasbahu Temple and the Man Singh Palace. The small town of Orchha is famous for its beautiful palaces, temples, and gardens. The renowned town of Khajuraho is known to have the largest number of Hindu and Jain temples famous for their exquisite and erotic art work. This group of temples have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are considered to be one of the “Seven Wonders of India”. Also popular in Khajuraho is the Khajuraho Dance Festival, held every year in February/March and gives visitors the chance to experience Indian classical dance against the backdrop of these beautiful temples. The city of Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh is famous for its plethora of mosques, lakes and temples, the most popular being the Lakshmi Narayan Temple. Also popular sights are the Birla Museum and the State Archaeological Museum.
